Trip hazard
Low stumps hidden in grass are easy to trip over, especially for children and guests.
Grind away leftover stumps below grade so you can level the ground, reseed the lawn, or plan new landscaping — safely and cleanly.
Leftover stumps can create real problems for your property and the people who use it.
Low stumps hidden in grass are easy to trip over, especially for children and guests.
Stumps get in the way of mowers and can damage blades and equipment.
Some species send up new shoots from the stump and roots after removal.
Decaying wood can attract insects and fungi to the area.
Stump grinding uses a machine with a rotating cutting wheel that chips the stump into small pieces, working down below the soil surface. Rather than pulling the entire root system out of the ground, grinding removes the visible stump and the top portion of the roots so the area can be leveled and restored.
Before we begin, we discuss how deep the grinding should go based on what you plan to do with the space. Grinding depth needed for reseeding grass is different from what may be needed before planting a new tree nearby or installing hardscape.
We check the area and discuss any known underground utilities or irrigation.
The stump is ground below grade to the agreed depth.
Grindings are handled as described in your estimate.
The area is ready for leveling, soil, and new planting.
Stump grinders throw wood chips and debris, so we keep people and pets away from the work area and protect nearby windows, vehicles, and surfaces where needed.
Access matters too. Backyard stumps behind fences, gates, or slopes may require smaller equipment. We look at gate widths and terrain during the estimate so there are no surprises on the day of the work.
Underground utilities: Before digging or grinding, underground utility lines should be located. In Ohio, you can contact the Ohio811 utility-locating service by calling 811. We will discuss this as part of planning the job.
Once the stump is ground down, you have options. Many homeowners fill the area with topsoil and reseed it to blend into the lawn. Others turn it into a planting bed, a patio extension, or the location for a new fence line.
If you plan to plant a new tree, it is usually best to choose a spot slightly away from the old stump location, where decaying roots will not interfere with new growth.

| Stump grinding | Full stump removal | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens | The stump is ground into chips below the soil surface. | The stump and major root ball are excavated from the ground. |
| Disturbance | Limited to the stump area. | Larger hole and more soil disturbance. |
| Roots | Remaining roots stay in the soil and decompose over time. | Most of the main root mass is removed. |
| Best for | Most lawns and landscapes where the space will be reseeded or planted. | Situations where construction or foundations require deeper clearance. |
Depth depends on your plans for the area. We agree on the depth before starting so the result fits what you intend to do with the space.
Grindings can be left to fill the hole, spread as mulch, or hauled away. Your estimate will describe how they will be handled.
Yes. We grind old stumps as well as stumps from removals we perform. If you need a tree taken down first, see Tree Removal.
Grinding removes the stump below grade. Some species may still send up occasional sprouts from remaining roots, which can usually be cut back as they appear.
Let us know how many stumps you have and roughly how large they are, and we will schedule a time to take a look.
